The idea is that the sun will project light onto the solar panel which is on the grass-the light will hit the panel and reflect onto various of the appliances that you see in the word energy and there will be a sound effect of that particular appliance that will come on (as if its being turned on from the suns energy. By the end of one minute (which is how long the movie is) all the appliances will be on and working. The line at the end will be

"In one minute more energy is radiated from the sun onto the earth than the whole population uses in a week." "Use it" or "now we can use it"

I wanted to note that the activities that take place in the one minute movie dont have to be activities that last a minute, it could be things like: it takes 2 hours to wash your clothes in the washing machine (and in brackets how much energy is used), it takes an hour to cook a chicken, it takes 2 minutes to make toast. etc.. i'm thinking maybe this could be more effective. Please send feedback

Solar Century-New Concept 2

Another idea is to make a film where there are situations of people in outdoors scenery and suddenly one gets thrown a toaster another gets thrown a hair dryer-generally there is a game of catch with electric appliances and as they are being thrown there is little facts about the appliance in text form at the bottom of the screen-reading for example,"A hairdryer burns 150kwh every minute" etc... again shown in the "screens" of the solar panel (see below) and at the end the punchline comes up, "In one minute more energy is radiated onto the earth than the whole population of the world uses in one minute." " Catch it" and you're left with the solar panel on your screen and the sun beating down on it.

New Concepts for Solar Century

I've been struggling with these ideas but i think i've narrowed it down to two quite simple ideas, yet easy to get creative with.

One is "one minute movie" this will portray different everyday activities that take one minute to complete and that involve electric appliances:
it takes one minute to boil an egg

it takes one minute to brush your teeth, it takes one minute to microwave popcorn

It takes one minute to startup your computer

it takes one minute to watch an advertisement on tv

it takes one minute to take the tube for one station

it takes one minute to watch this movie

it takes one minute to squeeze 7 oranges

it takes one minute to stop for gas

it takes one minute to pay at the till
etc...possibly including the amount of electricity used for that activity.e.g (100kwh)
the idea is that the movie is one minute long and all these activities are happening inside each of the small "screens" on a solar panel and at the end the camera zooms out and you see the actual Panel and the punchline goes something like this:

"In one minute, the sun radiates more energy onto the earth than the entire population of the world uses in one week."
or
"By the time you have watched this movie the sun will have radiated more energy onto the earth than the entire population of the world uses in a year."

Various thoughts i have had are maybe not writing about things that happen in a minute but our weekly amount of energy use from certain everyday activities: e.g: we brush our teeth 17-21 times per week using 750kwh in total etc...

I am now working on the visuals so please look back soon for them-in the meantime if you could give me some feedback that would be great!

Solar Century Final idea

Solar Century:

The idea is to create a Hollywood trailer of a futuristic movie where the world has practically run out of carbon emissions-the world is in a state of war, cars are left abandoned in the streets, there is no electricity, factories are shutting down and a state of chaos has taken over the world.
In between the scenes statements will be shown that give tragic facts about global warming. e.g:
"In one hour more sunlight falls on the earth than what is used by the entire population in one year."
or
"2 billion people in the world live without electricity"

I will take footage from films starring hollywood actors like Tom Cruise, Nicolas Cage etc... and by editing it, i will create a scenario (using voiceover) where they are the heroes trying to save the world giving facts about solar energy, they say to each other, "there is still hope, we must work fast!"

"Will they be able to save the world before its too late?"

Punch-lines: "
In cinemas near you from january, 2045."
"See the movie, don't live it"
"Will they be able to save the world before its too late?-dont wait to find out-act!"

I will find ready footage but certain scenes will be filmed.

Imagery of wars for oil communicated as an archive of history that theres no need for anymore because we dont need to fight for the sun. show imagery of the use of different materials and the conflicts because of them and mute the sound and say" what if there was a solution to our problems? now there is.

Darwins theory of evolution vs. religion- all have one thing in common-the sun is our "GOD" the driving life-force.-Preaching that god created the world-professor explaining the theory of evolution...

Comparing with something obvious: example: two guys, one goes to buy the paper-walks out of the house and theres a shop right in front of him.. he gets in the car and drives away (to somewhere further away...

a waste of energy-woman puts one plate in the dishwasher- one tshirt in the machine- showing waste of energy and punchline-stop wasting the energy from the sun use it!!

showing absurd behaviour and paralelising it to our behaviour towards the sun- you wouldnt put your child in danger but you actually are. start acting-shocking effect-showing

Protecting the things that protect you-shoes on glass-jacket in cold/snow-the world

Show how things would not work when fuels are no longer available-e.g an ambulance that is coming to save you-no petrol-it cant get there-therefore you will die.

A child is playing with its toy cars, trains, world map etc... when the child is not there the things are not working-parallelize the sun to a child mother calls him "come here Sun"

Illustrated book

My idea for the illustrated book is to introduce various characters by showing the things that they own or "their preferred brands". The idea is to photograph or illustrate/collage different branded objects from 8 to 10 people and introduce them in the book as a presentation of who these people are.

The images will consist of an outfit they would wear everyday (shoes (from adidas), dress(from topshop), skarf (from lucien pellat-finet), gloves, trousers etc) favorite objects (, gadgets (ipod) they carry around, favorite toy etc. The layout for the images would be like a fashion magazine shoot-without the models-just objects (an idea is to photograph the subject and then remove him with photoshop...

I will then make a questionnaire where i will show people the images and ask them their opinion on what type of person the objects reflect in respect to their age, type of music they like, what kind of places they go to, class background, racial background etc. I will reveal in the book both the answers of the questionnaire and the true answers from the characters

MT "BEE" Situations

Your on the bus listening to music on your phone and people start to get annoyed-mean glances and after a lot of huffing and puffing you're about to get told off or even beaten up... The bees come to the rescue and all of a sudden the mood changes people start to dig your music and feel the beats. From simple movement to full on dancing the bee has changed the negative attitude of people and transformed it into a positive, wild and happy one.

The MT "BEE"

The MT "bee" doesnt have to be taken in a literal sense. Though it could be an actual bee, the idea is to make it the personification of a bee. So in the situations expressed above, the "bee" would just appear "sting" the authority figure and disappear. This could be a young child dressed as a bee that just passes by and pinches the authority figure and runs off. Another idea could be a young man or woman dressed as a bee with wings etc. but underneath is wearing a metallica t-shirt-giving it a comical feel...

The Concept

The virus will be in the form of a bee that goes around stinging anyone that has lost their "MTV spirit", which is based on the values of youth. Being risky, spontaneous, innovative, fun, anarchic etc.

For example: A group of boys are grafitti-ing in the street and a police officer comes up from behind to "enforce the law" However, the MT"bee" appears and stings the policeman. Now that he is exposed to the virus his reaction is to tell the kids how beautiful their artwork is and advise them of an empty wall a couple of streets down.

Another clip could be a kid playing loud music in his room and his mother comes up to the room to tell them off. Again she is stung by the MT"Bee" and is exposed to the virus and instead of telling him off she asks if he could turn it up a bit.

Research & Brainstorming

After a process of brainstorming and analyzing the core values of the MTV brand i have drawn some conclusions.
Firstly, based on the brief and keeping into consideration the target market, i have drawn various concepts and ideas. The personality characteristics related with the MTV brand and its target market (16-24 year-olds) are fun, anarchic, shameless, challenging, in your face, smart and witty. Therefore, the idea behind MTV being a virus needs to challenge the everyday problems the youth is currently facing. One of the main issues is that of authority figures, e.g: parents, siblings, neighbors,teachers, police etc.
The idea behind my concept is to portray everyday confrontations with these authority figures and when they are exposed to the virus, their "expected" attitude changes to a completely "unexpected" one.
